Sewing is a lot like life...sure, there are patterns for just about everything, but in order to love what you do, or love what you make, you have to change the pattern to make it your own regardless if the change is a fraction of an inch or the length of a yard. And more often that not, those choices you make to change the pattern do not work out exactly the way you hope. It can be frustrating and challenging, and sometimes you have have to rip it all apart at the seams and start completely over. Which requires patience. A lot of patience. But in doing so, you create something that is far more rewarding, and far more beautiful, then what you started with.

An Oldie but a Goody...

Sometimes it is fun to go back to the patterns you started with, tried and true ones that boosted your confidence when you were first learning to sew. This Sling Bag one is that one for me.

When a work friend asked me a make a bag for her, we originally discussed one of the Amy Butler pattern Frenchy Shoulder Bags, but once I ordered her fabric and had a chance to see it in person, I realized that the Frenchy Bag simply wasn't big enough to do justice to the print. My friend chose this fabric for the orange and as you can see, the cut of the fabric was mostly the lavender color, so I decided to use the Sling Bag pattern instead to maximize as much of the orange as possible. And I love how it turned out!

I ordered the fabric from Crafter's Vision, this is the third time I have ordered fabric from them and I have been extremely happy with both the customer service and the quick shipping. I highly recommend checking out their sale section, I always think they have a good selection.

Do you have a tried and true pattern? Please feel free to comment and include a link to it if you've blogged about it, I would love to see them!

I have never made a sling bag, but every time I make a baby sling (not in a long time) I think I would like one...
Thanks for showing this. It is almost time to make another bag here anyway, lol, so thanks for the inspiration. Great job!
Was that from an Amy Butler pattern, too?

I make the Buttercup bag for little girls with their name on it as a "go to" gift. I also like to make a tote bag from a tute on Sew Mama Sew.

Elizabeth, I would LOVE to see your Birdie Sling! I have made a few and it is one of my most favorite patterns too! This particular sling pattern I used isn't an Amy Butler, but I do love all her bags. Will you be posting the Birdie soon?
