Sewing is a lot like life...sure, there are patterns for just about everything, but in order to love what you do, or love what you make, you have to change the pattern to make it your own regardless if the change is a fraction of an inch or the length of a yard. And more often that not, those choices you make to change the pattern do not work out exactly the way you hope. It can be frustrating and challenging, and sometimes you have have to rip it all apart at the seams and start completely over. Which requires patience. A lot of patience. But in doing so, you create something that is far more rewarding, and far more beautiful, then what you started with.

Ambivilance

Earlier this week I posted about 3 Sling Bags I had started over the weekend which were giving me a good lesson in being patient since I had left them unfinished since Sunday. That is, until last night. They are officially finished.

But, have you ever finished a project and been....well....ambivilant about it? Up until now I have loved almost every sewing project I have started....I loved the Birdie Sling, the Frenchy Shoulder Bag, the Frenchy Hand Bag, and the Sling Bag...and I have been happy with my choice of fabric almost of the time too. But these 3 Bags are the first time I have actually been ambivilant about finishing a project.

Take this purple one for example. I loved this print on the bolt on the shelf in the store. But now? I think she is pretty, but I don't love her. And I wished I would've used a dark purple thread for the decorative zig zag stitching down the side so it would've been more distinctive. But I didn't. And now she is just pretty, not anything special.

And this one. I LOVED this print on the shelf too. I am a Kansas girl at heart, and while the print is actually of Black Eyed Susans, which we do have a lot of in Kansas, it really reminded me of sunflowers, which remind me of home. So I couldn't wait to use it, even though the print wasn't exactly my style. And I like the bag. I just don't love it like I love some of my others. She also is pretty enough though.

And this one. She is nice enough too. But I do not love her. Boy, does that sound sad or what? Poor little bag. Now I feel sorry for her.

So, there you have it. My 3 ambivilant Sling Bags. Does this happen to everyone? I am actually feeling kind of depressed now.
Good thing I think I have just the right fabric to turn my mood around! I found these in the clearance bin at my local quilt shop over my lunch break...what should I do with them?!

  1. Yea! I get to post a comment. :) I was actually out at your etsy site today seeing if my favorite sling bag is still there and it is. I'm thinking I might slip it in to my order for the holidays...it's not like David will know if all of the order was spent on gifts for others or a little gift for myself!!! :)

  2. Yep, I have had that happen before. Funny enough, it is sometimes happens on projects I am really excited about in the beginning. I think yours are all cute though!

  3. oooo, I think the polka dots would make great crayon rolls. :) And the bags are lovely...but things you get excited about don't always work out. I feel that way about scrapbooking pages.

  4. I have absolutely done this. I have finished something and thought "... eh ..."
Although I have found that what may be just kind of "eh" to me is often "wow!" to another.

  9. I think they turned out really cute! :) You did a great job! Maybe all they need are big flowers sewn on the front somewhere, or some kind of embellishment. I do that a LOT, where I'm not super impressed with what I've made, but then I find if I keep going with it, it turns out to be my favorite! :)

Thanks for the Tag too!! I am totally going to do it on my blog! I'll let you know when it's up. (I'm just finally coming back to the blogging world since being sick). :)
